Gifty Baah

These portraits were created on our Saturday trip to Andrus on Hudson. As per the worksop, they were made with watercolor. I remember sitting at a table with older adults in the nursing home, some of them able to walk, some not, all coming in and not sure what to expect. They hesitantly picked up their brushes if they wanted to try, others more skeptical and more willing to just talk. I began to paint Janice as she painted her fence, experimenting with color and technique. I painted Rose who looked eagerly at my process as I painted her in the same color as her name. I painted Maize as I admired and complimented her red shawl, and Angela who maintained an apologetic manner as our time together was coming to an end. I loved seeing how their expressions began to change and become more characteristic as the painting progressed, and I hope I captured each of them in their essence.
